“Acel” is Maria Cecilia Beronilla Bisa - van Ommen, the youngest among the family of two sons and four daughters of career professors Simplicio P. Bisa and Paulina B. Bisa.
Acel's parents, both university professors and established writers, have a collection of books under their names with her father, Simplicio P. Bisa, a writer of Filipino short stories, novels and educational textbooks and her mother Paulina B. Bisa authoring and co-authoring with her husband a tandem of Filipino language and literature titles.
Music and literature surrounded Acel's everyday childhood as she grew up in the quiet suburban neighborhood of Teresa Heights in Fairview, Quezon City in the Philippines. It was her mother who first instilled the passion to sing and make melody as she taught Acel and her other siblings the skills and intricacies of playing the family piano.
2004 also marked the year she finally decided to take a break from Moonstar88. The band went through a one month transition period as they recruited Mayshelle Baay to accompany Acel in all of their April gigs.
As Mayshelle stepped up, Acel finally stepped aside from the spotlight as she performed her last gig with Moonstar88 in early May 2004 at an MTV event in the island of Cebu.
On May 15, 2004 Acel married her long time friend Danny van Ommen. Danny is of Dutch-Nepalese decent.
